Tom Piccirilli has written many fine books and stories but at this point in his career, for me anyway, I would call Every Shallow Cut his masterpiece."

Gemma: "...But like Chess Pargeter, I’ve certainly–at one time or another–been an angry, selfish person who’s made bad decisions dictated by privileging their own pain far above the pain of others; I’ve loved unwisely, and suffered for it; I’ve been betrayed, and betrayed in turn. And like Ash Rook, too, I’ve believed myself a hypocrite, unworthy of forgiveness; I’ve been arbitrarily given power over other people, and reveled in it; I’ve been afraid of death, as well as being terrified of what might (or might not) come after it.

So though some of the characters in A Book of Tongues represent things I only hope may lie somewhere inside me, all of them contain bits and pieces of things I know damn well do, from a capacity for bad temper, bad language and general bad behaviour to a not-so-sneaky liking for big guys with raspy voices and country goth-folk music… These points of similarity in the face of difference always being the only way any of us can imagine ourselves out of our own skins and into someone else’s, really."

"2. With two novels, two short story collections, and two novellas published, you’ve seen many different sides of publishing, what do you think is the hardest to break in to? How did you do it?

Certainly, the big NYC publishers remain the most difficult to break into. How did I do it? Stubborn
persistence, some talent, and a whole lot of luck, I guess. In 2003 I finished writing a quirky-
comedy novel called PHOBIA. I managed to get pre-blurbs (for lack of a better term) from two
amazingly talented and gracious writers: Poppy Z. Brite and Stewart O’Nan. Then I spent two
plus years collecting over 200 agent rejects. Most of the rejects went something like: “This is
funny and original, but we don’t know who we can sell this to.” I finally got my book on the desk
of Stephen Barbara, pretty much by accident. I’d sent a query to another agent who no longer
worked at the agency, but Stephen got the email and wanted to take a look. He understood the
book, suggested some revisions (his suggestions were spot on) and he took me on as a client. Of
course, we didn’t sell the novel (the publishers said the same thing the other agents said: “Funny,
original, but we don’t know who we can sell this to.”), but Stephen stuck with me. The sap."

Submissions Now Open for the Rannu Fund for Writers of Spec Fic!

The CZP / Rannu Fund For Writers of Speculative Fiction

TORONTO, Ontario (December 6, 2010) – Submissions are now open for the 3rd annual Rannu
Fund for Writers of speculative fiction.

The Rannu Fund was established by Sandra Kasturi to reward those who contributed to
the speculative fiction community. It was named in honour of her mother and step-father’s
contributions to the arts in Canada and Estonia.

In collaboration with ChiZine Publications (CZP), the Rannu Fund offers two awards: $500 CDN
prize for fiction, and another $500 CDN prize for poetry. Additionally, two honourable mentions
from each category will be awarded a $50 prize. All winners and honourable mentions will be
selected by a panel of judges composed of writers of science fiction, fantasy, horror, magic
realism, and surrealism.

The 2010 judges include horror legend Peter Straub, Governor General’s Award winner Jacob
Sheier, in addition to CZP co-publishers Sandra Kasturi and Brett Alexander Savory. All judging
will be blind.

Poetry submissions may include up to five poems and fiction submissions may include short
story or a novel excerpt up to 7,000 words. All submissions must be previously unpublished,
and in English. There is a $10 reading fee or $15 reading fee for two submissions. Submissions
should be sent to rannufund@gmail.com

The deadline is midnight on Sunday, January 15, 2011, and the winners will be announced May
